along these lines of "experimental" or "underground" hip hop...
off the top of my head
company flow
hopefully that was implied with mentioning el-p
rubberroom
(released a great album and 2 great 12" of it had a song on techno animals brotherhood of the bomb and a track on an anti prison 12" and havent heard em sisnce but the reconstruction 12" was something i literally wore out the record)
and of coarse mf doom
(he released operation dooms day a while ago it is good but the songs were mostly re-recordings of the 12" he did for the now defunct fondle em records and the lost alot of the rawness and energy of those recordings, tho defjux released a fondel em compelation that is really solid, try and get mfs 12" especially the double 12" he did with mf grimm its hot)
and admit it you love them neptunes beats like everyone else

there's something very appealing about female MCs who bust raunchy rhymes about their sexuality. unfortunately i haven't heard much in this area that i thought was that was good in a musical sense... instead you get stuff like khia's "my neck my back" which has deliciously dirty lyrics on top of a beat that's as wack as they come.+Cm wrote: NEVER,

i liked princess's duet w/mc paul barman but what little i've heard of her solo work didn't really grab me.
other interesting hip-hop of note (all male, sorry)
mc paul barman
sensational

i don't care how wack the beat is...khia's "my neck my back"
that song is a gem. with the whole miami bass thing? dude, miss thang rocks it like it's 1992.
i say rock on with your fluorescent fanny pack, khia, you go GORL.
you work it for that madd bling bling.
female mc- always bahamadia. the new song "transcent" with prod. by king britt is nice and chill. positive. the flip of that is an excellent track guesting QUASIMOTO. i love quasimoto.

yeah i have notorious KIM & it's hit or miss... whose idea was it to have sisqo guest-star on "how many licks"? jesus... & i heard her new single once on the radio; sounded pretty catchy but haven't heard much hype about her new record other than that.sievetronix wrote:well if you want the female mcs jus go for early lil kim
i've known hard men to blush when hearing her go at it..
hell yeah, i picked up "parts unknown" featuring sensational & it's pretty good. i need to do a mail-order from wordsound to pick up some other goodies soon.and while yr mentioning the wordsound crew
specter is pretty awesome

don't get me wrong: LOVE the lyrics, but would love it more with a good beat behind it.+Cm wrote:i don't care how wack the beat is...khia's "my neck my back"

i do kinda like the khia vs jagged edge version here: http://www.makesomenoise.co.uk/boots/bootlegs.asp but there was a khia vs nelly boot that i liked better; for some reason he didn't put that one up...
i guess i usually pay more attention to the sound of a track than the mc. it takes a really unique mc (kool keith, paul barman, odb) to grab my attention if i can't get into what the producer is doing.

mc slug/atmosphere is great, the lucy ford record is great stuff... cant recommend it enough, n im not really into that sorta rap, i like my geto boys .... the first selftitled album is good.......
mc paris is a great political rapper n what what(on some herbaliser stuff) aka jean grae who does taco day on the recent mr len album is a great female mc
dont mind princess superstar, khia is good too.... only heard that one trackof hers though
michael franti is ok, poetic/the grymreaper from gravediggaz(rip) was cool too
n tone loc

it wouldn't be the same song. if all hip hop was timbaland it wouldn't be interesting. dude i don't even think you can call her hip hop. more like 2 live crew revivalist dirty south crack-hop...bling. core. sound. at this point you can't ask for a good beat, you've already subjected yourself to the hip hop that clings to the side...scum-hop. give into it. somewhere inbetween those cookie cutter high hats is salvation from terminal musical over-intellectualism (not directed at anyone inparticular).don't get me wrong: LOVE the lyrics, but would love it more with a good beat behind it.
i think i also have to mention
jay z. i've managed to get hooked on MOST everything he's put out. not the collabos he's done with tree-ocks like mariah and beyonce, but "i just want to love u"...indispensible! i like memphis bleek too.
and vadim. i buy everything he puts out. hell, add in all of ninja tune for that matter.
but the number one hip hop track i'm crushing on now is by lazerus jackson called "hip hop police":
um. yes.you got your backpack and your email and your hip hop, ya'll too underground, and ya'll too fuckin' real, I only feel that spinning wheel, ya'll cops ain't stopping the deal"

who's asking for timbaland? i asked for a "good beat", not necessarily the bling-bling neptunes sound (though i do like the neptunes). you can be cheap & lo-fi & still be good. just out of the MCs i already mentioned, sensational is so lo-fi he recorded the vocals for his first few albums using headphones instead of a mic, for fuck's sake. or if you haven't heard the hawd gankstuh rappuhs, i highly recommend you check them out for some super trashy, scummy, lo-fi, low-brow, fun shit. "good" is not the same thing as "high production quality".+Cm wrote: if all hip hop was timbaland it wouldn't be interesting. dude i don't even think you can call her hip hop. more like 2 live crew revivalist dirty south crack-hop...bling. core. sound. at this point you can't ask for a good beat, you've already subjected yourself to the hip hop that clings to the side...scum-hop. give into it. somewhere inbetween those cookie cutter high hats is salvation from terminal musical over-intellectualism (not directed at anyone inparticular).
also just last night someone turned me on to the suicidal rap orgy... only heard one cut so far but it's pretty offensive, loud, very lo-fi, almost punk-sounding: http://sro.shitwank.com/
