well, the only improvement feature-wise is the drum rack.
apart from this they worked on refining the audio and midi engine.
here the randombreaks tip:
drag a break on an empty audio slot,copy-paste it in the same column (adiacent clips) as many times as many slices you wanna cut it into.
then, for each slice, select with the looping markers the single beat you want to isolate, as in recycle.
now, in the clip view, open up the clip launch properties, you'll see an area with the FOLLOW ACTION title.
there you'd need to specify after which amount of time (in beats and sub-beats) the action will start.
under that you have two menus and can choose two different actions for the clip.
usually i set the first slot to PLAY NEXT CLIP and the second to one of the following: PLAY ANY,PLAY OTHER, PLAY FIRST or PLAY LAST.
then you need to set the chance value for each of the two actions.
if you set it cleverly you can design a full break randomizer, maybe also makin other copies of the same clips, in the same column, but changin transpose value, pan, level or FX send....
it plays totally smoothly and its easy to control and maybe set it random, but not too random.
a brilliant part of this software, for real.

If you're a full time student or teach in an educational establishment then Ableton offer a discount on their software see http://www.ableton.com/shop-edu for more info.
Personally I would recommend Ableton over Reason. It offers far more scope for creativity in the long term. Most of the people I know who use Reason rewire it into Ableton anyway.

exactly.
i never particularly loved reason, also.
ableton is intuitive and user-friendly for beginners as well as reason, so its a matter of tastes.

i always used jeskola buzz as a tracker.
it is freeware and supported by a strong community of users\developers.
its one of the most extensive and free-flowing musical environments i know.
obviously,as with all trackers, you'll need sometime to change yer mind from horizontal to vertical and from decimal to hex

yes geroyche uses it (and helped me understanding some tips on it back in my soulseek 24/7 days)
the standard website for d\l is www.buzzmachines.com
but you can google it and try to find some other sites that have alternative install packs (better) because insalling buzz can be a bit of a trouble the first times.anyway theres a lot of literature about it on the web.
check also the buzzchurch forum for more tips and buzz-related community.

i.m.o. the real good point on Ableton is that it's a 'round' software:
you can use it as you want, you can resample in 1 sec, you can repeat operation like adding fx etc for 10 times and rendering and reimport in 2 sec
it really free your imagination!
i use it for 90% of ALL my stuff, studio and live;
i really found a software that permits me to do what i have in my mind in some seconds and not minutes neither hours (obviously a big work after the first ideas is needed)
it lacks a good good midi, i mean good midi writing structure, not talking about the awesome midi fxs, scales, chords etc;
you can achieve this reworking audio as you are working on midi, and this can be also more fun and interesting
i hope in the next version for a big midi improvement
